Right now, our country’s food system is broken. A few large companies, like Cargill, control every part of our food system, squeezing consumers and driving out small and mid-sized farmers.

We all have the right to safe, healthy food. This year, we have a chance to make sure the USDA implements the 2008 Fair Farm Rules, which level the playing field for small and mid-sized farmers, giving consumers access to safer, more sustainable food.

Right now, Senator Casey is on the fence on this issue. We need your help to make sure he stands up for small farmers, consumers and the environment.

Learn the basics of Square Foot Gardening with our presenter, Seppi Garrett of Your Garden Solution.

What is Square Foot Gardening?

It is a gardening concept created by Mel Bartholomew.  Mel, retired from a successful engineering consulting business in his early forties, began to develop over a number of years a gardening concept he called square foot gardening.  He went on to write the best selling gardening book, “All New Square Foot Gardening”  with over 2 million sold as well as doing gardening shows on PBS and the Discovery Channel.  In fact, his gardening show on PBS was the longest running gardening show ever in PBS history!

This presentation will run from 7:00 to about 8:00 pm at 40 North 19th Street in Camp Hill (very near Fredrickson Library). We will meet at Paul Garrett's house for the talk then walk about one block up to Seppi's house to see his Square Foot Garden.

Movie Night: A Farm For The Future

Wednesday, June 29 at 7:00 pm in Room A (downstairs) at the East Shore Area Library, Ethel Street, Colonial Park (behind the mall). This will be followed by a brief discussion.


Wildlife film maker Rebecca Hosking investigates how to transform her family's farm in Devon into a low energy farm for the future, and discovers that nature holds the key.

With her father close to retirement, Rebecca returns to her family's wildlife-friendly farm in Devon, to become the next generation to farm the land. But last year's high fuel prices were a wake-up call for Rebecca. Realising that all food production in the UK is completely dependent on abundant cheap fossil fuel, particularly oil, she sets out to discover just how secure this oil supply is.

Alarmed by the answers, she explores ways of farming without using fossil fuel. With the help of pioneering farmers and growers, Rebecca learns that it is actually nature that holds the key to farming in a low-energy future.
